Holy Sh-t!!!!!!!!!

Personally, I am an advocate of opening our borders and making access to our country a little more free. I understand illegal immigration is a problem, and that we live in a world where terrorism is a great threat.

This, however, makes me rethink that position. Get a load of that guy's picture, people.

Note to the attorney quoted at the end of the article: I'd push hard for insanity. I like your chances.

Yeah well:

Bill Anthony, a spokesman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, said the Canada-born Despres could not be detained because he is a naturalized U.S. citizen and was not wanted on any criminal charges on the day in question.

Anthony said Despres was questioned for two hours before he was released. During that time, he said, customs agents employed "every conceivable method" to check for warrants or see if Despres had broken any laws in trying to re-enter the country.

"Nobody asked us to detain him," Anthony said. "Being bizarre is not a reason to keep somebody out of this country or lock them up. ... We are governed by laws and regulations, and he did not violate any regulations."

Basically the guy is a US Citizen who, at the time, had broken no laws. If we start detaining people because they look strange, what's next?

Steven, you disappoint me. It isn't like you to fall for the company line.

"At a time when the United States is tightening its borders, how could a man toting what appeared to be a bloody chain saw be allowed into the country?"

I think more than two hours of diligence was in order here, don't you? I know we both agree - customs didn't kill those people, this lunatic did - but you said "he had broken no laws." Sadly, we know that's not true.

The confiscated the stuff. They obviously considered it to be weapons! And during that two hours, where they clearly must have suspected this guy of SOMETHING, they couldn't have called some police department within a two-hour driving radius to check the chainsaw to see what the hell the red stains were?? Come on!!! Being bizzarre may not keep you out of the US, but being STUPID doesn't earn you any free passes either pass-the-buck asshole! (Excuse the language.)

Arresting him then wouldn't have stopped the crime from happening.

Steve: Okay, you're sexy and all, but what if the crazy guy had committed ANOTHER crime? We're talking about a guy who took a chain saw to his neighbors. This is not exactly normal behavior. What if he had slipped into obscurity in the US? While they had him in their grasp, why release him onto the unsuspecting American public?

You can't arrest people based on what ifs!!!!

There weren't any "what ifs" involved. He had a bloody chainsaw. Customs failed to perform due diligence, and they're lucky they don't have more blood on their hands.

You can't detain the guy because of how he looks, but a bloody weapon should've tipped customs off.

He had a chainsaw that "appeared" to be bloody. They can only detain him for so long before charging him with a crime. Well.. actually that's not true anymore according to Herr Bush. Still, they did what they could as customs agents, found nothing wrong and let him go. That's the end of their involvement in the story.
